ABOUT ME

Hi and Welcome to Shizen Counseling, PLLC!

I'm Charlotte Mulgrew (she/her) and I am a Japanese-American, Licensed Professional Counselor in Dallas, Texas. I have been a counselor since 2017, and I'm grateful that life has brought me to this profession - I can't imagine any other profession that allows me to genuinely connect with others in such a meaningful and authentic way.

My interests in this field started in my high school Psychology class and since then, I have attended University of South Florida for my Bachelor of Arts in Criminology, followed by Nova Southeastern University for my Masters of Science in Mental Health Counseling.

Since graduating, I have provided counseling in a range of settings such as: domestic violence shelters, private homes, the mobile crisis team, an outpatient counseling center, and in the hospital setting specifically for eating disorder treatment.

When I'm not wearing my counselor hat, I love spending time with my dog, exploring new restaurants (sushi is my favorite), grabbing coffee with friends, and watching scary movies.

MY APPROACH

The "Shizen" Approach

"Shizen" (自然) means natural in Japanese, and I think this word best describes my holistic, eclectic, and multicultural approach to counseling and healing as a whole. It is my belief that by creating a safe, non-judgmental, and supportive therapeutic dynamic in the counseling setting, healing is the natural by-product. In my sessions, I look to repair your connection with food, body, and inner-self by incorporating various modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and follow a Health At Every Size (HAES) framework.

AREAS OF FOCUS

EATING DISORDER RECOVERY

My approach to eating disorder recovery is to view your health as a whole, with the goal to meet you where you are at to improve your relationship with food, your body, and your inner-self. Treatment may include instilling alternative coping skills, processing events and emotional patterns that lead to disordered eating behaviors, and working collaboratively with other team members such as your doctor or dietitian to ensure your health.

TRAUMA RECOVERY

It has been my personal and professional experience that trauma(s) can be part of the root of disconnection between your mind, body, and soul. Experiencing trauma can instill defensive coping and distrustful thought patterns that can lead us to struggle with shame, isolation, and complex emotions. Treatment may focus on increasing your inner sense of safety, re-learning alternative coping skills, and processing events at your pace.

IDENTITY EXPLORATION

Being an Asian-American counselor, I really value the importance of exploring one's unique identity and its impacts to our experiences with others, and ourselves. I approach my counseling sessions with a multicultural and LGBTQIA+ affirming framework as I want to understand and encourage your unique experiences and authentic self. I specialize in working with Asian clients looking to explore their racial and cultural identity, and can speak Japanese conversationally.

MEAL SUPPORT

When recovering from an eating disorder, meal times can be the greatest stressors in our day. My experience as a Program Therapist in an eating disorder treatment center has given me various techniques for meal engagement so that you are able to improve your relationship with food and your body. Meal support can provide a safe, non-judgmental space where I can guide you on practicing coping skills in the moment to reduce stress, increase motivation, and support you to stay on track.
